The State Museum of Musical Culture of Azerbaijan
The museum was opened in 1967 and its objective is collection, storage, study and popularization of the materials related to music history of Azerbaijan. There are more than 40 thousand exhibits collected in the museum fund. Among them are such Azerbaijani national musical instruments as tar, kamancha, saz, daf, goshanaghara, zurna, ney, as well as other musical instruments with specific features – cane-tar, cane-saz, including gramophones, gramophone records. Moreover, collection of the museum contains original music manuscripts of Uzeyir Hajibeyov, the founder of Azerbaijan professional music, the famous composers Gara Garayev, Fikret Amirov, Arif Melikov, Suleyman Alesgerov, Jovdat Hajiyev, Bulbul, the founder of the national professional vocal art, selections of their works, personal belongings of the prominent musicians, posters, concert programs, music related books and other materials. Memorial-museums of Niyazi and Vagif Mustafazade and “Permanent Exhibition of Traditional Musical Instruments” are the branches of museum. Memorial-museum of Niyazi is devoted the memory of prominent composer and conductor. Some rooms of the apartment are kept as they were when maestro was alive. Memorial-museum of Vagif Mustafazade is devoted life and activities of the prominent musician. “Permanent Exhibition of Traditional Musical Instruments” exhibits the information about the performing art to the visitors.
The Ensemble of Old Traditional Musical Instruments functions within the museum. One of the unique features of the ensemble is that the musicians perform music of XIV century, as well as folk songs of Azerbaijani people in musical instruments that were used in Middle Ages, eventually forgotten and later restored.
