Since ancient times (approximately 5 thousand years ago) human being had a requirement for information interchange, information transformation from distance to distance. Since primary communal life, the labor relations process appeared necessity of sociability in humankind, a different kind of information in order to hunt jointly and cultivate a land together, to protect from natural disaster and terrible animals. Ancient people used firing in different numbers and volumes, messengers, trained pigeons and other means for delivering information from one point to another.In Azerbaijan existed delivery of information by messengers since ancient times. But systematized postal communication was created in 1501. At the same year, Head of Safavits State, well-known military leader Shah Ismayil Khatai created regularly operating postal communication for economical development of the country, protect the country from enemies, as well as establish solid state management system, gather information from remote areas of the country and abroad.Modern post was created in In Azerbaijan in early XIX century. First post office was opened in 1818 in Yelisavetpol (current Ganja). On June 01, 1818 the first post communication was created in Azerbaijan. Post expedition was organised in Baku in 1826, in Nakhchivan on March 12, 1828.On June 15, 1830 a post bureau was created with the first degree in Shamkha and Shusha in order to develop trade relations between Russia and Zacaucasia. So post bureaus appeared in Azerbaijan territory in 1830 (first class in Shusha, Shamakha, Baku and Nakhchivan, second class in Ganca and Guba).Delivery of postal items by railway started on May 09, 1883 between Baku and Tbilisi, in 1900 between Baku and Darband. First post delivery between ports of Caucasus and Rasht and Astarabad ports of Iran over Caspian Sea created in 1861. Postal communication between Tbilisi and Culfa was built to protect transit trade of Iran for 1863-1972. The first mail correspondence change was established between Iran and Azerbaijan creating post office in Julfa.When Azerbaijan Democratic Republic declared its independence on May 28, 1918, in the structure of the government was established the Ministry of Post and Telegraph on October 06, 1918. On March 15, 1919 the interchange of postal items, money orders, valuable letters and parcels were organised between Azerbaijan and Georgia. Post-telegraph relations between Azerbaijan and Iran were originated on April 06, 1920. Since 20th years of previous century started dynamic development of post in Azerbaijan and figures were increased mainly compared to 1913. So if number of communication entities were 19 and received letters 3 million in 1913, these figures increased respectively 59 and 5 million.In 1928 compared to 1920, the number of post entities increaed 1,95 times or 95%, post boxes 2,33 times or 233%, parcels 17,3 times, money orders 4 times, periodicals 125%, letters more than 2 times or 200%.On the eve of World War II, development of economy and culture in the country, betterment of social condition of people increased demand for postal services. At that period postal communication networks increased 9 times and reached to 524 compared to 1920. 402 of them or 76,7% located in villages.In 1940, distance of post routes increased 2,6 times and consisted 6767 km. If in 1920 a post was delivered only by horse vehicle, in 1940 lengh of motor routes was 1884.In 1945, the International Post Expedition was organised in Baku. This event allowed to movement of international parcel correspondence, its protection and control . At that year the lengh of post delivery by magistral air transport was 2078 km., domestic air transport was 1042.At the end of 1945 number of postmen in the country was 1687, which of 1449 was pedestrian, 238 rider, which of pedestrian which belongs to entities 55, rider 1, collective farmer pedestrian 1390 and rider 237.In 1950 compared to 1940 volume of letters increased 140%, parcels 80%, money orders 237%, periodicals 80%, post boxes up to 3000.In 1955 the lengh of post routes consisted 8668 km. Post delivery distance was 5906,4 thousand km., which of 2967 km. automobile, horse-waggon 2939,4 thousand km. Delivery volume by air transport was 736,1 ton, by sea 4212 ton. Distance for railway was 152,5 km.In 1970 compared to 1940, number of post entities increased 3 times and reached 1590, which of in rural areas 1171, number of mail correspondence increased 3 times and consisted 75 million, parcels increased 2 times, periodicals 6,5 times, distance of post routes 3 times (reached 20023 km), number of automobile routes increased 9 times and reached 1705 thousand km. This is completed as reduction of horse-waggon routes.At the end of XX century, with collapse of USSR and gaining independence of the country started new stage in the development of postal communication. “Azerpost” Production Union started to organize of post and electrician communication and provide services in the country.“Azerpost” SE as a follower of “Azerpost” PU was founded by order of the Ministry of Communication dated 23.09.1999, #151 “On continuation of reforms and improvement of a structure in post communication field”. Enterprise was founded on the base of “Azerpost” PU and became its legal successor.
