Gizilburun settlement is located in 18 km south from Nakhchivan city, on the left shore of Araz River, on a territory called Gizilburun. The part of the settlement area which remained safe is 2 hectares. There were archaeological excavations taken place in two areas here in 1969. The area of exploration excavations taken in the first area had been 3 x 3.5 meters. Grey and pink colored ceramics, pieces of monochrome colored plates, raping hook pieces had been found here. On the second excavation area (10 x 10 meters) a better remaining of 3 meter thick civilized layer were found. Remainders of four-cornered and oval shaped building related to the middle Bronze Age have been found from about 1.6 ms depth during the excavations time. Walls of the round shaped building were built from river stones using clay solution. The walls of the four-cornered building had been built with river stones and clay mud. Grey and pink colored simple ceramics, pieces of monochrome colored plates, obsidian plates, sickle parts, grain stones, arrow tips, bone awls have been found in the time of the investigating of the building remaining. Many osteologic remainders of cattle and sheep and goats had been found there. A clay cast used for spilling of the ornament things was found, what is especially interesting. It is possible to say that according to archaeological materials, Gizilburun settlement had been one of main production centers of Azerbaijan in the middle Bronze Age. Gizilburun’s necropolis is located near the settlement. The necropolis had been registered in the result of accidental destruction of a stone box kind grave in 1895. A few grave monuments related to middle Bronze Age had been studied during the excavations carried out by N.V.Fyodorov and I.I.Meshaninov. The stone box graves which were opened by I.I.Meshaninov are parts of characteristic collective burials. The skeletons had been buried in different folded positions, directed to different directions. Grave equipment consisted of bronze weapons, decorations, clay plates. The clay plates were basically pink or grey color. One part of the pink plates had been decorated with monochrome and polychrome colors. There are different thoughts connected with the date of Gizilburun box-stone graves in the archaeological literature. V.H.Aliyev relates the Gizilburun necropolis materials to middle Bronze Age which is XVII-XIV centuries BC.
