Azerbaijan is considered one of the ancient dwellings in the world. The natural-geographic condition, rich flora and fauna of Azerbaijan has allowed the most ancient people to live here. The exictence of natural caves in the area of Azerbaijan has also contributed to this.

The most ancient people have lived in the camps in Garabag, Nakhchivan, Kazakh, Kalbajar, Yardimli, etc. Regions of Azerbaijan. The cave Azikh is the most interesting, mostly studied and most significant among these camps.

The cave has begun to be studied from 1960. It is situated in 14 km North-West from Fuzuli city, on the left bank of Guruchay, in 900 metres height from the sea level.

The cave occupies a large territory. It consists of 6 salons joined with one another by a narrow passage. The biggest of the salons is the third one (with 104 m2 area). The entrances to the cave are from two sides.

A part of the jaw bone of the primary man lived in Ashol period has been found during the archaelogical excavations in 1968. During the investigation of the jaw bone it was found out that the azikh man lived 350-400 thousand years ago. The jaw bone belonged to a young, 19-20 year-old woman. This is the fourth finding in the world. So, we may say that the area of Azerbaijan has been one of the areas where the most ancient people lived.

During the excavations in the cave, there was found a cultured sheet with 10-14 metres thickness. The labor tools made of more than 3 thousand stones, more than 30 thousand petrified animal bones belonging to the Early Paleolithic era have been found from the sheet.

4 fire places have been found out when the cave was studied. 150 kg ash-coal residue has been found in the fire place. The area of one of the fire places is about 10 m2. The remainders of buildings have been found in the fire places as well.

The cave Azikh is the only multilayered monument belonging to the Anthropogenic period. Primary people have lived in this camp from Early Paleolithic era till Eneolithic era. Azikh findings once again evidence that people begun to live in the area of Azerbaijan 1.5 million years ago.
