Catholic Church of Holy Virgin Maria – on March, 7th, 2008 official opening ceremony of Catholic Church of Holy Virgin Maria, located in Baku in the Shamilj Azizbekov street took place. The President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev participated in the ceremony. The church was constructed under the project of the professor of architecture of the University of Naples, Pado Rudzhejro and the main architect of Baku Akif Abdullayev. In the building, constructed in modern style on the area of 1256 м2, systems of heating, ventilation and firefighting had been established. Building was financed by the Vatican State. At the entrance of the building a memorial plate with dates of church’s foundation, names of architects and the civil engineering firm name was installed. In church there is a hall capable of accommodating 250-300 believers simultaneously. In special places of church there are photos reflecting the Azerbaijan-Vatican relations – visit of the national leader to Vatican in 1997, visit of Pope John Paul II to Azerbaijan in 2002 and visit of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to Vatican in 2005, and also the meetings held during these visits. During the visit to Azerbaijan, took place in April, 2007, the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski visited the church and presented to it three bells as a gift. These bells are striked once every week and in holidays before a prayer. Portrait of John Paul II, presented by embassy of Poland in Baku, and a monument to Jesus Christ, presented to mission of the Roman Catholic Church in Azerbaijan by the Azerbaijan State Customs Committee, have been established in church foregrounds. At present there are 600 Catholics in Azerbaijan, 300 of which live in our republic on a permanent basis. In 1912 the Rylsky family of oil barons constructed Catholic Church of Holy Maria (the architect – I.K.Ploshko). In Soviet period – in 1934 – the church was taken down, and on its place the Dzerzhinsky Club, at present Shahrijar Recreational Center, was constructed.
