Lam (Arcivan) – the people that live in south region of our country have original living architecture style. Lam summer houses have been included name. There are remainders of these buildings in the regions as Lenkoran, Astara, Masally, related to XVIII-XIX centuries.
About 50 lams have existed only in Archivan village of Astara once. Buildings have been destructed from the influence of the natural calamities or neglect of care later on. Lams played a big role in families’ life, receiving guests of the family in the summer season, in comfortable spending nights etc. An example of this rare architecture has been kept in Archivan village’s inhabitant Asadulla Musayev’s yard at present. The lam has been reconstructed by specialists of the restoration office of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism anew two years ago.
This is a rest place. People rest here in summer. Waggons have been at that time, no cars. Traveling people stayed here for night and rested here. The masters have known at that time that side the wind blows. Wind blows on the second floor. This is a place for wind. This place is good for rest in summer. The lam in Archivan village of Astara district has an interesting story; “Ulduz” movie had been made here in 1963. The famous stage of Mahammad and Zuleykha has been taken in this lam. Summer buildings which used to be living houses of the indigenous population is protected as important monuments by state now. Lams in the territory have been constructed near to living houses, mostly in gardens. Square form buildings mostly have two or three stores. Its foundation is build from red brick; the columns are maid of logs; the covering is made from tile material. Interesting side is that tree logs used in the construction were put to one-another and no nails have been used. There are no walls in lams, so the weather condition is always normal.
There is only one lam remained in Masally and several lams have remained in Lenkoran. There are several lams in Astara too. Because of the beautiful architecture, specific buildings have been considered important monuments to state and have been registered. There is another kind of lam in Astara, which was built according to local climate. This is a two store summer house constructed in the type of lam. But in rear cases you can see such buildings in the territory.
