Asgaran castle – this barrier known among people as "Asgaran castle" was built by Penaheli khan as an east khanate boundary in XVIII. The time and the builder of the Asgaran castle in different sources is various. Some historians connect the building of the castle with the name of Mehreli khan, some others – with İbrahimxelil khan. Possibly, the base of the castle was put by Mehreli khan; and İbrahim khan continued and completed it. The Derbend barrier was Shirvan’s north, the Asgaran barrier was the east side of the Karabakh khanate. The Asgaran castle is located in approximately 24 km distance from Shusha, 5 km from Khojali and 12 km south of the Aghdam city, in the right and left shores of the river Gargar on a mountainside. There is approximately 500 ms width valley of the river and a not great ravine encircled with castle walls between mountains. The castle was built in the time of the Karabakh khanate growth; its purpose was to cover the valley of river Gargar and to create a little pass from the river side. Therefore, the Asgaran castle was built on both shores of the river along its right and left shores. The right (the east) shore fortification of the castle consists of twofold stone walls, fortified with towers. All the towers have two stores; and they were connected by two-store corridors. In accordance with the relief, corridors connect ground floors of the towers with second floors of the next towers. The last east tower protected from the mountain pass consists of a special shaped room complex. The left shore part (west) of the castle is connected to a defense ring and consists of a right-angled trapezium form fortifications. Taking into account the relief, the constructed castle walls were strengthened by six towers. The castle walls start from the Gargar River, stretch towards the mountain and form the castle yard. There is a tower in each corner of the yard form a square shaped closed fortification. There are top arched gates which separate the Lower yard from this yard and also include a transverse wall. The Lower yard is open from the east side, so, both walls reach the river. Each of six towers located on left shore of the fortification is separated to two floors by an arch with some etching. The third floor has been protected till loop-holes only. The square form fortification on the upper part seems to have a special importance in the defense system and it was constructed so that it would be possible to continue fighting here even if the Lower part of the castle was passed to the hand of the enemy. The 9 ms of height and 2 ms of thickness of the castle walls’ surface was covered by river stones. Horizontally built row floor stones bring reviving to the construction. As it"s known, the Asgaran castle was also passed to the enemy hand, like many of our monuments in the result of Armenian aggression.
