Panah khan"s castle - Built in the 18th century, the inner castle of Shusha was on a high hill near Ganja gate. According to historian Mir Mehdi Khazan, Panah khan"s castle was "a small castle-like palace with walls and towers" and khan also had ordered to build "a beautiful palace" for his elder son on the hill near his own mansion. As shown in the schemas drawn by Russian architects, there was a complex consisting of a court-house and other auxiliary buildings and rooms in the inner castle which had complicated shape proper to the relief. As other monuments in Shusha, this palace complex was also destroyed after Russian occupation. The palace complex was fenced by walls having round watch towers. There were quadrangle-shaped fortresses with inner yards in most strategic positions of the city-castle. These fortresses were protected by a defense regiment. The fortresses were positioned in high places in outer edge of city-castle in order to observe the surroundings and to organize solid defense in case of an enemy threat. Castle walls, watch towers and fortresses creates a magnificent view along with the woody and headlong rock landscape of Shusha plateau. Only remainders of Panah khan"s castle have survived to our time.
