Stone castle has been erected on a hill. It has two - Shirvan and Ganja- gates. Shaki castle is located in the upper north-east part of the city surrounding Sheki Khan Palace. Both from military strategic point of view and in terms of micro climate opportunities the castle is in very suitable position. It was built by the first Shaki khan - Haji Chelebi khan (1743-1755). Total length of the castle walls is 1300 m, while total height is 4 m in the south and 8 m in the north. Thickness of the walls is 2.2 m. There are two gates and guarding watch towers with more than 1000 loop-holes in the castle. During Russian invasion lasting about 50 years reconstruction works have been carried out here.
