Historical-Architectural reservation "Chiraggala" has been created with the order of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic Mr. Ilham Aliyev on September 27, 2006. Chiraggala is one of the most ancient historical culture monuments of Azerbaijan. The Castle is located in the 20-25 kilometers of the region on the top of the precipice rock called Chanaggaya. The Chiraggala name origin is very interesting too. The castle is located on a precipice rock which is called "Chiraggaya" among people. It seems, before this castle was erected, people would inform about the enemy coming by making a fire on the top of this precipice rock. Later with the same purpose on the top of this rock a grandiose castle was built; on its tallest tower top that remained till today people would make fire.
Chiraggala is a defense castle built on a giant rock of the highest mountain top of the territory. The Gilgil River has been the main guard of the castle territory. The castle walls that were strengthened by cylindrical towers make up a closed system. The head tower located on the top of the rock is jointed to castle walls. The castle walls and semi circus towers (12 towers) were built from stone; the head tower was faced with brick. The castle was built in time of the Sasanids in V-VI centuries and was used till the XVIII century. Its name tells about the secret service character and defense purpose of the building. This castle would deliver information about enemy coming and other information to other castles and places of Azerbaijan via a fire. The Chiraggala castle used to receive information mostly from Derbend, made known by smoke. There are secret underground roads of the castle besides the roads to the sea and to other places. The Chiraggala is famous not by its historical age, but also with springs which are curative sources. Thousands of ill people find healing from liver, gastrointestinal tract and bile-duct illnesses in the "Galaalti" sanatorium with 360 beds in all the year round and then return back to their homes. These curative springs are like bridges between the past and present, between the present and the future, which acquaints people with history. Chiraggala is located in 20 km distance from the region centre. An asphalt road has been built on this distance.
