Mingachevir HPS was founded in 1945 and put into service in 1954. It was the biggest HPS of the country consisting of 6 hydro-aggregates and enjoying some 371 thousand kilowatt power. A year later, the construction of Shirvan and Yukhari Karabakh channels and Varvara HPS started and electric transmission facilities of high tension were set. Prior to that, the highest dam both in the Soviet Union and in Europe was built in Mingachevir. 12 million cubic meters soil, 900 thousand cubic meters concrete and 24 thousand tons of metal materials were used in the construction of the dam.
For the transmission of the produced electricity to Baku an electric line of 260 kilometers length and of 220 kilowatt was set.
