Ismail Bey Gutgashinli’s tombstone is located in the Sultanbaba graveyard near his house. Tombstone was put in 1861. According to the Muslim rules I.Gutgashinli’s photo was not given. The Arabic writing carved on the monument and it is known that the grave belongs to I.Gutgashinli. In 1985-86 years, prominent Azerbaijani writer, military and public figure I. Gutgashinli’s house museum was created and grave monument revised.Ismail Bey Gutgashinli was born on 27 January 1809, in the family of Sultan Nasrullah in Gutgashin district of Nuha. He got scientific and religious education in the years of childhood. In 1818, he was sent to study in higher military school in Russia. He rose up from soldier to higher military rank of Major-General. One of the first Azerbaijanis was awarded the Order of St. George 4th degree. His work “Mr. Rashid and Mrs. Seadet” is considered the first modern prose story of Azerbaijani literature. His "Travel notes" is valuable information for the geography of Azerbaijan. He played an important role to development of the education and enlightenment of the Azerbaijani people. He was also known as a benefactor.On 14 August 1861, I.Gutgashinli died of poisoning while was resting with his wife Bika Hanim Usmiyeva in Agdash caravanserai. It is assumed that he has been killed by Armenians at the hand of the government. He was brought to Gutgashin (Gabala) from Agdash and was buried in the cemetery of Sultanbaba.In 1852, Ismail Bey left for the pilgrimage with his wife Bike, his aunt Sure, Mirza Haji Aliafendi and others. In his book "Travel Notes" or "Safarname" Ismail Bey said about the places he went. His meetings and traveling places were noted in "Travel Notes". In fact, in April of 1854, Marshal of the Anatolian army Zarif Mustafa Pasha sent a secret letter to Ismail Bey and asked him to organize a revolt against Russia in Azerbaijan and Dagestan. But this letter was held to the hands of Armenian colonel M.T. Loris-Melikov"s spies. Therefore, since 1855, the imperial government took control of Ismail Bey. It is a reason of Ismail"s death.A copy of "Safarname" was found in Shih baba sanctuary. Ismail"s friend Haji Aliafendi copied the book. The book was hidden to protect in the sanctuary at the time of destruction of many books. At present, 126 pages have been found.
