Shaki city Juma Mosque – The Mosque is located in the centre of Shaki city. Its construction date is not exactly known, but as it’s said, the Mosque has been constructed in the end of the XIX century. Its yard area is 700 square metres; inside area is 14x30 metres. Shaki city Juma Mosque’s walls have been built with the river-bed stones and burnt bricks. Its minaret has the round form; its height reaches 24 metres. The minarets roof is covered with the white iron layer. And there is the iron half-moon and the five-pointed star symbol on it. Its pulpit has been worked out with the wood and covered with the decorative pattern. The pulpit is ten-staged. The ceiling is wooden, has the right-angled form and stands on four wooden columns. The praying hall has three entrance doors and 44 windows. There are 6 big chandeliers in the praying hall. The Mosque’s walls have been plastered with the sand-cement solution. Its sanctuary (2 metres height) has been worked out with the vegetative ornaments. There is the praying hall for women on the first floor (its area is 30x3).In soviet times, exactly from 1937 till 1990 years, this Mosque has been used as the store-house, sport gym, the silk enterprise’s technical school. In 1990 year this Mosque has been burnt in Armenian-Moslem fight. In the end of 1990 year repair-reconstruction works have been carried out in here by the Reconstruction Department of Azerbaijan Republic Ministry of Culture. But this works were very insignificant. Since 1993 year up to now repair-reconstruction works are carried out here by the Youth Assistance Fond of Turkey Religious Foundation. During this period the interior and the facade of the Mosque have been completely reconstructed, and its roof has been covered with white iron layer. In 1937 year Mosque’s minaret was also destroyed. That minaret’s height was 26 metres. (And the new raised minaret’s height is 24 metres). Since 1993 year the religious school carries out activity at the Mosque. The education period in the school is 3 years. Adjoining to Azerbaijani teachers, Turkish teachers also teach here.
