Remnants of MosqueAs a result of excavation works carried out around Maiden Tower through 1990-1993 by historian archeologist Farhad Ibrahimov, a mosque dated back to IX century were found in the north of the Tower. During the short-term archeological excavation works in 1998, 2 small rooms were found in this area. The bigger room of them was later excavated and as a result, a sanctuary placed in the recess with arch-shaped top next to southern-west corner of the western wall was found. There is a Cufic inscription in ancient Arabian alphabet consisting of two words on the sanctuary. Epigraphist Mashadikhanum Nemat read this inscription. The meaning of the inscription is: “Power belongs to Allah”. Investigators say that this inscription dates back to VIII-IX centuries based on comparative analysis and handwriting characteristics. It is supposed that mosque, the rooms built next to it and monument with lined-up arches together form a single complex. Taking into consideration that the city is on the caravan-trade road, we could say that this was a cloister for dervishes. Historian archeologist Farhad Ibrahimov says that it is possible that this mosque is the mosque of Baba Kuhi Bakuvi, an ecclesiastical scholar, minister of religion, a Bakuvian by birth who lived at the time the mosque was constructed.
