Haji Alakbar Mosque – Haji Alakbar Mosque in Fizuli city is one of the first works of Karbalayi Safikhan. Among architect’s mosques without minarets Haji Alakbar Mosque’s plan construction was in quadratic form. By placing four octagonal columns in the praying hall of the Mosque architect separated it on three parts. Constructing the special glassed veranda for the women on the first floor face to face with the sanctuary, he remained faithful to his tradition. This glass gallery completely separated the way from external wall door of corner on the crossing of main facade and left wall from the common entrance. 9 sharp illustrated cupolas cover the praying hall of the Mosque. The arrow-shaped arches completing bays in the hall keep harmony with the cupolas. Internal wall pilasters are located in the same direction with the pillar arrows, and one wing of the arch-joints is placed on them. So the same pilasters serve to the general construction solution. Architect Haji Alakbar didn’t let to use any ornamental elements for purposes of mosque’s decoration. Simple stone construction of the praying hall and its easy relief, a bit decorated sanctuary gives the coolness and freedom to the internal appearance of the Mosque. The Mosque’s floor is decorated with the Garabagh carpet.Haji Alakbar Mosque’s portal is worked out in asymmetric form. And this came from achieving the bigness of the glassed veranda section intended for the women and the assistance room under it. The joint arched portal which looks dusk on the white background of the wall reminds the entrance of Aghdam Mosque. The pilasters coming forward of the wall surface of the three other facades (besides of the back side of the Mosque), are considered like the interior construction. The words “This is the Architect Karbalayi Safikhan Qarabaghli’s work” have been written on the stone inscription at the entrance door. The construction’s date - 1307 year by h-l calendar is also shown on the inscription. And by the chronology of Christianity it matches with the 1889-1890 year. And why was this religious place named after Haji Alakbar Mosque? Haji Alakbar was the generous man. He has allocated the means and invited the masters from Shusha for construction of this mosque. As a sign of honour and respect to his charitable works the local inhabitants have buried Haji Alakbar opposite the first of the left windows of the mosque constructed by himself.
