Ashur Mosque (Lezghin Mosque) – It was constructed by the master Najaf Ashur Ibrahim ogly. The Mosque got its name in the end of XIX – beginning of XX century during the beginning of oil industry development. So, when the workers from Daghistan flew to Baku industry enterprises for gaining money, inhabitants of Icheri Sheher entrusted them this Mosque for praying. Praying of the workers from Daghistan here for a long time was the reason that the Mosque got the name “Lezghin Mosque” by the people etymology. The Mosque was built over the monument of Sasanids period. Only two galleries and the room covered with cupola remained of that monument. The Mosque has the parallelepiped form. Two small windows have been put on its south side later. The conjoined entrance on the north-east side of the mosque leads to the praying hall covered with wide one-camera thick type conjoined cupola. Beautiful constructed crown as if separates the praying hall on two parts. And the sanctuary constructed from the stones like the crown, decorated with vegetative and geometric figures has been wide decorated with the stalactite belonging to the XII century. The second sanctuary has been built by Baku inhabitant in the south-west corner of the praying hall in the XX century. The ancient part of the mosque upper than planed big stone blocks has been plastered. There is the board with “Allah” word written on it with the Kufic handwriting, which was placed on the arrow and simple profiled cornice on the south facade. In 1970 year during the restoration processes while archaeological excavations two semicircular belonging to Sasanids period have been found under the south part of the building. And from the back of the arches the room with cupola was found. The mosque is supposed to has been constructed over the fire-worship praying-house. It’s not excepted that the future archaeological excavations will find out other parts of the Praying-house of Moslems located on the ancient building.
