The Museum of History and Ethnography in Shamakhy has been established in 1945. Exposition plan and project prepared by scientists of Azerbaijan National Museum of History related to creation of new scientific exposition of the Museum of History and Ethnography in Shamakhy was approved in 2008 and implemented in 2008-2009. Each hall was colored in accordance with the subject; same color information panels have been printed. Since green symbolizes nature, green color was chosen for the "Ethnography" section; gray color symbolizes special mineral used in ancient house building of Shamakhy, therefore gray color used for the section called "Samakhy in ancient times"; because Shirvan is called “the land of milk”, milk color was chosen as the base for the section called “Samakhy in Shirvanshakhs’ period” etc. The showcases of the museum have been made of ash-tree that grows in Shamakhy forests. The museum emblem has been engraved on showcases and panels of the museum. The emblem that symbolizes Shirvanshakhs power includes two lions standing face to face inside a cupola (“Shirvan” means “the land of lions”) and the head of a cow (“Shirvan” in Persian language means “milk”). Considering the nature of the conference, it is emphasized that a database containing information on Shamakhy villages and well-known people of Shamakhy was placed in the entrance hall of the museum. Touch screen and a monitor are used in the information supply. In the pass from the Ethnography hall to the History hall a showing-room was prepared for the demonstration of the film about Shirvan history produced by the Museum of History and Ethnography of Shamakhy. In the film, mugham master from Shamakha Alim Gasimov sang "Shirvan shikastasy (melody)", actor from Shamakha Namigkamal read the text that was compiled by Fariz Khalilli. For the first time among the Museums of History and Ethnography of Azerbaijan, a voluminous and colored catalogue, that includes all the museum expositions, was published in Shamakhy. For the first time among local museums of Azerbaijan, with the help of this project, on the base of the world museum standards, the cultural heritage of Shirvan region is presented to local and foreign tourists in a consecutive order, using light effects, information in two languages (Azeri and English), and electronic instrumentations.
