Azadliq SquareThe construction of the biggest and central square in Baku began after the construction of Government House was completed in 1952. It was the biggest square in former USSR. After the installation of the statue of V. I. Lenin in front of Government House in 1955, the square began to be called “Lenin Square”. For the first time in 1988 during the events leading to independence of the country Lenin Square was called Azadliq Square (“azadliq” means “freedom” in Azerbaijani). After the events of January 20, 1990 new name of the square (Azadliq Square) was unanimously accepted by the people and then was registered officially. In 2008 the second parade of Armed Forces of Azerbaijan took place in the Azadliq Square.
