Palace of ShirvanshahsThe Palace of Shirvanshahs was built in 1420 with the order of Shirvanshah Khalilullah I of Darbandi dynasty. The ensemble of the palace is consisted of 9 buildings: the main building of the palace, Divankhana (court-house), Dervish sepulcher, Eastern gate (portal), mosque of the palace, Kei-Gubad mosque, mausoleum of the palace, a bathhouse and a reservoir. The main building of the palace was built in 1420s, adjacent to it, Divankhana was constructed in 1450s, sepulcher was built in 1435, the mosque was built in 1442, sepulcher of Sayyid Yahya Bakuvi was constructed in 1450s, Northern Gate was built in 1585. The buildings of the Ensemble of Shirvanshahs’ Palace are grouped in 3 levels in accordance with the relief of the area. The main building of the Palace and adjacent to it, Divankhana are located in the upper yard on the top, in the lower yard there are mausoleum and Shah’s Mosque with minaret, next to upper yard are located sepulcher of Sayyid Yahya Jalaladdin Bakuvi and Kei-Gubad Mosque. At the entry of the yard where the mausoleum is located, the portal – Northern Gate was constructed. A bathhouse near the ensemble of the Shirvanshahs’ Palace, and a reservoir at the end of Shah’s Kahriz (underground water supply pipe) have survived up to date. The palace is two-storey building. There are 27 rooms on the first floor, 25 rooms on the second floor. Shirvanshahs’ Palace is regarded as the masterpiece of the architecture of Azerbaijan of Middle Ages. The complex was declared museum-reserve in 1964 and taken into state protection. There are more than 200 monuments in the complex. The main buildings of the Shirvanshahs’ Palace were supposedly constructed by Memar Ali (architect Ali). The name of Memar Ali was inscribed on the drop-shaped medallions on the portal of the Mausoleum dating back to 1435. The name of Master Amirshah Belyanguhi is written in the inscription on the portal of Northern Gate. Inscriptions, artistic carvings and architectural elements on the stones of the Palace prove that this Palace is an example of national architecture of Azerbaijan. This complex of monuments was included in the list of protected monuments by UNESCO in 1997.
