FunicularBaku Funicular was built with the initiatives of Alish Lambaranski. It was put into service on May 5, 1960. In Soviet time, the trains for funicular were made in Kharkov city of Ukraine with special order and brought to Baku. Baku Funicular has two stations: “Bahram Gur” and “Shahidlar Khiyabani” (Martyrs’ Lane). The distance between the stations is 455 meters. Funicular has only two wagons and the wagons cover this distance between the stations in 4 minutes. The interval between the trains is 10 minutes. Baku Funicular had the capacity to transport 2 thousand people per hour on average. Baku Funicular has been repaired several times in different times. At the end of 1980s, it was closed on the grounds that it was in an emergency state and was put back into service at the end of 2001. Baku Funicular underwent capital repairs twice in 2001 and 2007. After 2007’s repair, the noise from the movement of the trains was minimized. In April, 2011, funicular was closed again for repair. After capital repairs and reconstruction, Baku Funicular was put back in to service again on May 23, 2012.
