Aza sacred place is located in Aza village of Ordubad region. The inscriptions of the Aza sacred place and the inscriptions remained in the surrounding cemetery provide an opportunity to determine not only the history of the sacred place, but also the place of Azad city, which was not known up to this day.
The Aza sacred place is located in the lower part of the village. No signs remained from the external appearance of the sacred place, and the buildings existed there. There are three ram stones around the sacred place; two of them have no writing. The third monument’s head was broken. There is an inscription on the side of the monument, which says, “The owner of it (the grave) is Safar. Year 877 (1472-1473)”.
Two gravestones in the right and left sides of the building had been used as building material. Many stones remained in the laying. According to the writings that can be seen, Koran verses were carved on the monument.
The above-mentioned monuments show that there was a big graveyard in the surroundings of the sacred place one day. Because houses were built in the place of the graveyard, no evidence remained except the above-mentioned gravestones and the monument inside of the sacred place. Verses from Koran were carved in the inscription placed on joint arch form niche on the gravestone (2.27x0.66x0.8 meter height). In the lower part, there is another inscription written in Arabic neskh script with suls elements, which says, "Indigent, happy, righteous, deceased, great Movlana Shamsaddin Mahammad went to be close to Allah, who is eternal God; he moved from perishable world to the eternal world in zulhijje month of 892 year. Let Allah lighten his grave. Amen! Zilhijje 892 (18.11 - 17.12.1487)."
In the inscription, he is called "great Movlana", "righteous", and this testifies about the fact that he was great religious scholar. The grave became a pilgrimage place, and this testifies about the fact that he used to have great power among people. Honorable burial next to Movlana Shamsaddin Mahammad’s grave proves once again that one of the social, economic and political centers was located on the trade-caravan road, where this sacred place is today.
