National Library of Azerbaijan named after M. F. AkhundovIt is located on 29, Khagani street, Baku city. Being the largest library of Azerbaijan, it is one of the largest libraries in Caucasus and Europe. The number of the publications stored in the funds of the library is more than 5 million. State Library of Azerbaijan Republic was established in 1923 (today’s “National Library of Azerbaijan named after M. F. Akhundov”) and this stimulated the further development of librarianship. When the library was founded, 5000 copies of books were given to its fund by Baku Department of Emperor’s Technical Society and from the funds of Baku Public Association libraries. The library began to grow fast and focused on acquisition of fund since its establishment. In 1939 the library was named after M. F. Akhundov, prominent thinker, playwright, and enlightener. Later years the scope of activities of the library extended, several new departments opened, the number of the publications in its funds reached millions. In 1961 the library moved to the grandiose building that is considered a historical monument from the architectural point of view. The architecture is Mikayil Huseynov. According to the Laws of Azerbaijan Republic “On Librarianship” and “On Publishing business”, National Library gets compulsory free copies of the publications published across the country and based on them creates the archive fund of the books in Azerbaijan. In 2004 the library was given “National Library” status with the Order of Cabinet of Ministers and this is the highest appraisal of the work of the library. National Library of Azerbaijan is the member of Conference of European National Librarians International Organization.
