Khyzy was founded in 1930. Administrative centre of the region is Khyzy town. Area makes 1,85 thousands km². The nearest region among the mountainous regions of Azerbaijan to Baku is Khyzy. Main part of the region consists of forest. Region joins Caspian Sea in the east. Altiagaj (six trees) National Park, founded in 2004 for protection of flora and fauna of southeast slopes of Greater Caucasus chain, has a natural condition for lynx, bear, wild boar, roe and rare Tur mountain coat. Marvellous Beshbarmag (five fingers) rock is situated in this region.
