Gusar district is located in the southeast of Azerbaijan and bounds with Dagestan. Administrative center of the district is a city of Gusar. The city is at the distance of 35 km to the railway station of Khudat. The name of "Gusar" origins from the tribe of "khisar". This is a land of mountains and valleys. The highest peak of Azerbaijan is in the territory of this region - Bazarduzu mountain (4466 m). The district is noted for its rich flora. 20% of the territory is covered with the forests. State reserve at the area of 15000 ha is located in the territory of Gusar district; there is maintained beech forest named "Alistan-baba" near the settlement of Urva at the area of 7 ha. The features of the district are beautiful waterfalls of Shaknabaz and Laza.
