Agjabadi region was established in 1930, abolished in 1963 and subordinated to Aghdam Region, became an independence in 1965, again. The territory of Agjabadi region, one of the largest agricultural regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan, is 1756 km². Administrative center is Agjabadi city. The name means a large dwelling (Agja – large, Badi – dwelling, settlement). This city is one of the ancient living quarters of Azerbaijan. The material signs proving this antiquity eneolithic, bronze, survivals of residential areas belonging to ancient period and middle ages such as Kamiltapa, Nargiztapa, Garakober, Yantapa, Galatapa and Gavur aryk draw attention.
