Ujar was founded on January 24, 1939. Centre is Ujar town. Area makes 853 km². Ujer was noted as mediaeval city in Azerbaijan. Baku-Tbilisi Railway and main road, as well Ancient Silk Way pass through Ujar and these increase the economic important of the region. Climate is semidesert and dry steppe. Economy mainly consists of cotton-growing, grain-growing, animal-breeding, silkworm-breeding, dry subtropical fruit-growing, wine-growing, melon and gourd growing and poultry-breeding. Carper weaving profession is protected in Upper Shilyan village.
