Siyazan district was formed on February 11, 1940. The total area of the district is 0.738 thousand square kilometers. The district is located in the north-eastern part of Azerbaijan, in Samur-Davachi lowland, on the shore of the Caspian Sea near the Greater Caucasus. The etymology of the word «Siyazan» is not exactly established. The name is believed to be derived from Persian, meaning "White Women", a reference to the original inhabitants,Tats. Siyazan is an industrial district. The main natural resources are oil, natural gas, sand, gravel, clay. The mining industry prevails in the economy.
